Creating a world
with robust reproductive, maternal and child health data
Shifo develops and implements innovative solutions to be contextually-sensitive, effective and sustainable in the absence of donor funding. We work to strengthen health systems in low and middle income countries by addressing three main issues: the health workforce shortage; the absence of accurate and complete data, and lack of sustainable electronic health information systems.
Our solutions were developed in response to several of the weaknesses of point-of-care eHealth solutions in low-resource settings – such as dependency on electricity at the point-of care, lack of scalability, and high operations costs – that often lead to failure owing to the significant resources required to sustain them.
We focus equally on developing solutions that produce reliable data, and on process innovation to create efficient processes. When Shifo's solutions are implemented all other HMIS forms which were used before are replaced
Average running costs of HMIS forms USD 0,50; MyChild Solution USD 0,30 and point-of-care electronic solution USD 4,79. Therefore governments can sustain the running costs based on existing budgets
Key actors at every level have access to their data, learn how to use it to inform their work to identify and close the actual gaps based on reliable, relevant and timely data
Solution does not depend on electricity, network, security at the point-of-care
As much as 73% reduction in administration for health workers
“Congratulations for leading the way with a cutting edge innovation that has the potential to disrupt and shape the future of immunisation delivery”
– Gavi, 2016
With Shifo Solutions, patient medical history is recorded on smart paper forms by health workers. These forms, which replace existing HMIS forms and registers, do not require electricity, connectivity or security at the point of care delivery. Smart paper forms are then scanned and digitised.
